Amir’s path turns out to be the atonement of his sins – saving Sohrab. With the death of Amir’s father, Amir essentially loses the “crutch” in his life. Hearing the condolences of strangers, Amir realizes that without his father, he is alone in the world, left to carve out his own path. ![]() He is unable to defend himself due to Hassan’s protection as well as his self entitlement to an elite status due to his father. For example during Hassan and Amir’s first encounter with Assef, Amir relies on the fact that his father is a notable man to protect himself. ![]() Through multiple instances, we learn that Amir is very dependent on his father. It seems as if Amir’s source of identity, belonging and self worth solely comes from the approval of his father. These are perfect examples of Amir being “baba’s son”. Hassan hadn’t done anything to earn Baba’s affections he’d just been born with that stupid harelip” (Hosseini 40). Acts of love towards Hassan disturb Amir as he states that “I wished I too had some kind of scar that would beget Baba’s sympathy. Amir felt that by winning the kite tournament, he would finally gain his father’s approval, even if it meant letting his best friend Hassan get raped to take home the kite to his father. Amir’s desperation to connect with his father leads him to commit regrettable actions. Being the son of a remarkable father, Amir was inclined to live up to his father’s expectations. He was a well respected man in Afghanistan with his acts of bravery and generosity such as standing up to the Russian guard, donating to the poor and building an orphanage. In his childhood, Amir was constantly neglected as he fell in the shadow of his distinguished and influential father. ![]() In my opinion, this quote summarizes Amir’s past while also foreshadowing the journey he will soon encounter. My whole life, I had been ‘Baba’s son.’….Baba couldn’t show me the way anymore. “ I realized how much of who I was, what I was, had been defined by Baba and the marks he had left on people’s lives.
